At
an early age it became obvious to those who knew her that the arts would figure
prominently in Jan's life. This journey began at dancing school, and adventures
in other art forms quickly followed. She appeared in her first play in third
grade, and began studying piano and violin in the fourth. Suffice it to say,
Jan has always been singing.
Since then, she has earned a reputation as a first-rate artist and an audience-pleasing
performer. Jan has appeared in both intimate settings and grand concert halls,
and has sung to rave reviews throughout the United States, Europe, South America
and the Middle East. Her performances have included concerts, oratorios, operas,
musical theatre and cabaret.
In October 2002, Jan and jazz pianist Frank Ponzio debuted their cabaret show
at Judy's Chelsea in Manhattan. Their unique style ignited audiences at sold-out
houses, and garnered enthusiastic reviews. Stu Hamstra of Cabaret Hotline
chose Jan and Frank's 2002 debut show, "Journeys of the Heart", as
one of the Best 25 Cabaret Shows of 2002. You can enjoy the music from that
show on their newly released CD, "I Thought About You".
Jan is currently recording a CD with pianist Gary Norden featuring the songs
of 20th century classical American composers. It will be released soon.
When not performing, Jan maintains a private voice studio in Manhattan working
with singers of all ages who are studying various types and styles of music,
as well as providing singing-voice therapy for clients with injured voices.
She is currently on the faculty of CAP21, the musical theatre studio at the
Tisch School of the Arts of New York University.
Jan's concern about the state of the arts in our current educational climate
led her to become a trustee of Arts Horizons, a non-profit organization that
touches the lives of over 30,000 children each year by bringing the arts into
schools in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. She joined this board because
she feels we have an obligation to ensure that our children are given the opportunity
to explore their creativity and individuality through the arts.
As
a teacher and singer, Jan is deeply interested in the quality of the singing
experience and vocal instruction. She is currently president of the New York
City Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS-NYC),
a professional organization that is dedicated to the highest standards of singing
through excellence in teaching and the promotion of vocal education and research.
After earning a Master of Music degree at the University of Illinois, Champagne-Urbana,
Jan received her Doctorate of Music from Indiana University.
In her leisure time, Jan enjoys gardening, golf, snow skiing, cycling and needlepoint.
